Housed in eight landmarked brownstones in New York City's Greenwich Village, City and Country School was founded in 1914 by Caroline Pratt.
At a time when education was largely rigid and rote, Pratt imagined something fundamentally different: a place where children could explore, experiment, and learn through real-world experiences.
She unbolted the desks and designed classrooms as workshops and play spaces where curiosity, creativity, and collaboration shaped the day.
Revolutionary in its time, her approach has since been affirmed by modern research and has influenced progressive schools across the country.
More than a century later, City and Country remains a cornerstone of progressive education, blending rigorous academics with inquiry, collaboration, and joy.
On its historic West Village campus, students develop agency, critical thinking, and resourcefulness that extend well beyond the classroom.
Each year, educators from around the world visit to observe these practices in action, while alumni often reflect that C&C was the place where, above all their educational experiences, they truly learned how to think.
