School Notes
- Reformation Lutheran School has been serving the children and families of San Diego since 1970. We have established a long history of academic excellence while at the same time keeping our curriculum centered on Christ. Our school is part of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). The WELS school system is the 4th largest private school system in the United States and has been serving families in need of a Christian education since the mid 1800's. Our teachers are certified by the WELS and have been trained at Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota, the WELS College of Ministry. Our high standards and excellent instruction combined with training in God's Word gives children a solid academic and spiritual foundation. Being a parent means making some very difficult decisions. Not the least of which is choosing a school for your child. God has instructed parents to "train child in the way they should go" and he promises that "when they are old they will not turn far from it". Reformation Lutheran School is a place where you will find teachers dedicated to providing your child with the safety and training needed to have success academically and socially. However, the greatest strength you will see in our faculty is their desire to work with your family and aid you as you grow spiritually. The faculty and staff of Reformation Lutheran School would be honored if you would choose us to help you in bringing up your child to know the love of their Savior.
- Reformation Lutheran School students experience personal attention from well-trained teachers in small classes. Students can participate in extracurricular athletics programs to support a well-rounded education and development. In grades K-8, the academic program includes Spanish, art, handwriting and music along with core subjects of religion, math, English, literature, writing, science, spelling, history and social studies. All subjects are taught in the light of God's Word with a strong adherence to traditional Christian values. We love Reformation for our preschooler and are excited to have her grow in the school through 8th grade. The amount of students to teachers is smaller so they get more focus on them. One thing that really stood out to me too was how kind the students are to each other and the parents. Older grades greet my preschooler in the morning and hold the door for me. You can just tell from the student's behavior that they are not only being taught well academically but with morals and manners.

This is a bit of a long-winded review, but I wanted to cover everything! Reformation has been a perfect school for my son. He went to Horizon Christian Academy prior to their closing that campus 3 years ago, and he is very happy at Reformation. He is the type of student that usually does very well in school naturally and can get bored if not challenged enough; but when overwhelmed with too much he doesn't like that either. The academics at this school are just right the English Social Studies, Spelling, Science, and Reading are great. I also appreciate that the Math is NOT Common Core. Spanish is taught by a part time Spanish teacher, and the current Art program is called Meet the Masters and is a great once a week class incorporating learning about famous artists and making projects. For sports, the Volleyball and Basketball are actually very well run, there is a nice gym, with games against other small San Diego schools. The best things about Reformation are the amazing teachers. All of them are really just excellent! They not only know how to teach the subjects, but they truly care about the kids so much, the amount of effort and heart they put into the classes is stellar. Depending on the number of students in a given year, a teacher may teach one grade, or it may be a combo class, such as my son's current 4th/5th grade class. With the small class size, the teacher will know your child and recognize any needs that may arise. The opportunity to learn with and socialize with kids of other ages is beneficial for everyone (this also applies to their convenient and budget-friendly after-care program). Lastly, I will say something about the religious aspect, because it is a Christian (Lutheran) private school. I am a grandchild of a pastor in London, but was brought up only attending church on Christmas Eve, if that. We still don't go to church every Sunday, so I appreciate Reformation bringing the knowledge of God to my son. Religion is a part of the curriculum, and the kids go to chapel each Wednesday. They learn about the Bible; They memorize verses weekly, and the environment is Christian. If you don't consider yourself a "religious" person, you should still consider this school for your child. When you see a school that has above average academics, and is not overly expensive (no more that we paid for daycare with the baby annually)...how could you go wrong allowing your child an education that incorporates love, trust, responsibility, and Christian ethics. If you worry about what will a kid from a small Christian K-8th school do if faced with going to a public high school, my answer comes from what an older parent told me once. These Reformation graduates go on to whatever challenges they may face in high. schools with not only a solid academic history, but with God's moral compass to guide them.
