The Highland School

98 Sycamore Springs Lane
Ellenboro, WV 26346
We are a democratic day school.  Our daily social interactions provide the opportunity for individuals to learn.
Children learn through experience - through following their interests, coming to terms with boundaries, and understanding the consequences of their actions.
Our students develop confidence, independence, resourcefulness, self-motivation, and responsibility in a school community that values individual rights and the democratic process. Our students take advantage of our 500 acres of forests, fields, and streams, wireless Internet access, our library, gym, art, music, and other rooms.
Highland students are constantly active in pursuing what they are interested in: whether that is a particular academic subject, a skill they are developing, or talent they naturally have.
Our students have the space and time to really delve into their passions.

School Notes

  • A wide variety of children do well at Highland. New students are voted in by the General School Meeting. Applying students must be twelve or under unless they have had prior experience at a democratic school. We treat school members as responsible partners in our daily life. We find that when children are expected to be responsible and are held accountable for their actions, they become responsible members of our community. We are not concerned about a child`s past diagnoses (ADHD, ODD, etc.) as we will assess the "fit" during the visiting week and first month of school. Our experience is that without the pressure of conforming to a pre-formulated, standardized curriculum, most children quickly adjust to the freedom and responsibility at Highland.
