UNIS is chartered by the New York State Board of Regents for the purpose of establishing, maintaining, and operating a United Nations International School, including a kindergarten and elementary school which will fit the specific needs of children of the different nationalities comprising the United Nations. The school is open to families from the United Nations and families outside it, and both international and New York families.
UNIS is accredited by the European Council of International Schools.
The school has two campuses: the one in Queens is from kindergarten to eighth grade, and the Queens students can automatically transfer to the Manhattan campus for high school.
The secondary program culminates in the International Baccalaureate, and the school's internationally recognized academic standards enable its students to transfer to international and national schools and to be eligible for admission to universities in the United States and other countries.
