School Profile
  • Adjacent to the 185-acre Great Meadows conservation land, the Waldorf School of Lexington, founded in 1971, serves students from preschool through grade 8. The school offers a challenging academic program, provided by faculty educated in the understanding of students' cognitive, emotional, and physical developmental stages. A member of a global network of Waldorf schools, WSL provides a rich, rounded curriculum with a balance of academics, arts, music, and physical education. Beginning in first grade, the program integrates humanities and sciences with creative arts as well as two world languages. From grades 3 to 8, all students study a string or woodwind instrument and play together in a school ensemble or orchestra. The dramatic arts animate the curriculum with all elementary students participating in a class play yearly. WSL expands its classrooms into the natural surroundings with an organic gardening program, farm and field trips, nature observation and walks on conservation land, and through its seasonal, community festivals. Athletics and movement are an important part of every student's day through eighth grade. Sustained by a vibrant community of educators and supported by engaged parents, the school`s educational philosophy and culture instills in students respect for themselves, for each other, and for the living world around them. Our graduates enroll in a wide variety of independent and public high schools, colleges, and universities. WSL prepares students for a lifetime of engaged, self-directed learning.

We couldn't ask for a better environment for them. They feel safe, supported, and deeply connected to their classmates, teachers, and the entire school community. There's a true sense of belonging here that's hard to find elsewhere- everyone from staff to parents seems genuinely invested in each child's growth and well-being. One of the most remarkable aspects is the close-knit community that extends beyond the classroom. We've built meaningful relationships with so many of the other parents, creating a network of support and friendship that feels like family. Whether it's at school events, casual gatherings, or just connecting over shared experiences, there's a real bond that enriches our lives and enhances our kids' school experience. It's truly amazing to be part of a school where everyone feels involved, connected, and uplifted. We're incredibly grateful for this community and for the positive impact it has on our family every day.

My children have attended Waldorf schools the entire lives, this one after we moved to the area in 2012. In my opinion, the biggest gift you can do for your child is to give them a Waldorf education. I have two masters degrees in education and have worked in educational media & technology for more than 25 years. It is the ONLY education I feel gives children everything they need, while also being an antidote to the many stresses and ills of our current culture. In addition, they understand the effects of media on children and choose media and technology judiciously. If you're concerned about the effects of media on children, especially these days as it is affecting children in all sorts of unhealthy ways (depression, anxiety, etc.), there is NO other school that understands the research and data better and no school that keeps it out of the classroom (and most families keep it out of their homes). The executives in Silicon Valley send their kids to Waldorf schools! That says a lot! My children are now teenagers and I can see how they differ from their peers because of their Waldorf education. Note that while the school is in East Lexington, there is morning bus service from Cambridge and Arlington. If transportation is your only inhibitor, know that you can get your kids to WSL easily in the mornings! Part of the mission of the bus is to improve socio-economic and racial diversity at the school, since it is dedicated to this mission, and the school offers financial assistance and scholarships. If you're at all interested, please visit their website, attend an Open House, or contact Kate Woll in the Admission Officer to schedule a tour. You'll be glad you did!
