School Notes

Our school runs an extended-day, extended-year calendar with facets specifically designed to foster the character and grit needed to conquer the achievement gap that plagues students of low socioeconomic backgrounds. Because of our commitment to serving the urban poor, the characteristics of our educational model must be compassionate, intentional, comprehensive, and thorough:
  • A college-preparatory curriculum emphasizing critical thinking and ethical reflection
  • Small class sizes, with a 10:1 or smaller student-to-teacher ratio
  • Mandatory summer programming to retain and advance critical knowledge
  • Three meals each day
  • Transportation to and from school via public transit, chartered vans, and buses from the student`s school district
  • Individual and group counseling
  • Career development and financial literacy programs
  • SAT preparation and intensive guidance throughout the college application process
  • Assistance with emergency needs, such as medical and dental care and food scarcity
  • Continued support for alumni throughout their college years and beyond
  • Workplace guidance and internship placement
The Neighborhood Academy provides for the full academic lifecycle of a student, including, but not limited to, sports and athletics, arts programming, college preparation and application, meals and nutrition, individual and group counseling, supportive services to manage immediate and urgent needs, and once in a lifetime opportunities, such as traveling and touring domestic and international locations. We see access to this programming as essential to character and morale building, high educational growth and attainment, and future professional opportunities in their career field of choice.
