The School in Rose Valley is an independent, progressive school
serving students from Preschool through Sixth Grade. Founded in
1929, the school has a long history of educating children through a
hands-on, experiential approach that values curiosity, creativity,
independence, and a strong sense of community.
At SRV, learning extends far beyond traditional classroom
walls. Students spend meaningful time outdoors and engage with the
natural world through gardening, farming, exploration, observation,
and play. Across all grade levels, students learn by doing, asking
questions, solving problems, collaborating with others, and making
connections across disciplines.
SRV's progressive approach is designed to meet children where
they are while challenging them to grow as learners and as members
of a community. Classrooms emphasize collaboration, discussion,
creativity, and authentic problem-solving alongside strong
foundations in literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, and
the arts. Students are encouraged to develop the confidence to
think for themselves, take intellectual risks, and approach
challenges with curiosity and persistence.
The school's small, close-knit community is an important part
of the SRV experience. Teachers know their students well and work
closely with families to support each child's academic, social, and
emotional development. Students have opportunities to build
meaningful relationships across grade levels and to contribute to
the life of the school community.
SRV's goal is not simply to prepare students for the next grade
or the next school. We strive to help children become thoughtful,
capable, compassionate, and engaged people who are ready to
navigate the world with curiosity, confidence, and a sense of
responsibility.

Dr. Peter C. Nowell - Dr. Peter C. Nowell was a pioneering physician and cancer researcher who attended The School in Rose Valley. He co-discovered the Philadelphia chromosome, a groundbreaking discovery that established the first direct link between a chromosomal abnormality and cancer. Nowell later became the first director of the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center, now the Abramson Cancer Center, and was recognized with numerous honors, including the Albert Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award and the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Life Science. His family credited his early experiences at Rose Valley with helping spark his lifelong interest in science.
Caroly Wilcox - Caroly Wilcox was a puppeteer and theatrical designer whose creative career helped shape some of the most beloved characters in children's television. A graduate of The School in Rose Valley, Wilcox joined Jim Henson's Muppet workshop in 1969 and went on to design, build, and perform characters for Sesame Street, including the Yip-Yips and an early version of Elmo. She also worked on The Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock, and several Muppet films, leaving a lasting mark on children's television and puppetry.
