Editor's note: I recently asked Bobby Bossman, Director of SPIRE Academy, to explain and outline the kind of athletic programs and training the Academy offers. Specialized sports academies have expanded significantly over the past decade, giving young women and men the opportunity to pursue elite athletic development while maintaining college-preparatory academics. SPIRE Academy remains one of the leading examples of this model. ~Rob
For talented student-athletes, balancing academics and athletic development can be one of the greatest challenges of the high school years. SPIRE Academy was designed to address that challenge by combining flexible academic scheduling with individualized athletic training, sports performance programs, and college preparation.
Below, Bobby Bossman explains how the Academy approaches student-athlete development.
How Does a Specialty Institute Such as SPIRE Academy Handle the Balance of Academics and Athletic Training?
By having flexibility with each student's time and the ability to create custom daily schedules, our staff can plan the most appropriate training day unique to each student-athlete. Some athletes may require more or less time in academic training based on progress. We have the ability to accommodate accordingly by infusing more academic time when needed and allowing those who are ahead academically extra periods of athletic training.
This is versus the traditional high school setting that blocks students into a structured school day before athletic activities even begin.
SPIRE also has the ability to condense the academic portion of the day by removing some filler blocks such as study halls and physical education classes to allow athletes opportunities to train in the mornings as well when their bodies are physically the freshest.
How Do You Advise Your Young Athletes Regarding Their Academics?
All of our student-athletes are advised to complete all required core courses as per current National Collegiate Athletic Association eligibility standards. NCAA schools require college-bound student-athletes to build a foundation of high school courses to prepare them for the academic expectations of college.
Classes that are typically considered NCAA core courses include:
- English
- Mathematics
- Natural or physical sciences
- Social sciences
- Additional world language and college-preparatory electives
We also follow current Ohio graduation requirements and prepare our students for success on college admissions testing through our curriculum, academic support systems, and college readiness programs.
In today's recruiting environment, academic performance remains critically important. While athletic ability may open doors, academic preparation often determines whether student-athletes can successfully take advantage of collegiate opportunities.

Outline a Typical Program Day for a Basketball Player
A typical day for a basketball player looks as follows. We can customize our day based on the preferences and needs of each athlete:
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 7:30 AM - 8:00 AM | Breakfast |
| 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM | Academics |
| 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM | Lunch |
| 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM | Team Practice |
| 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM | Performance Training |
| 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM | Individual Skill Workout |
| 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM | Dinner |
| 7:00 PM - 7:30 PM | Mental Skills Training |
| 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM | Study Hall |
| 9:00 PM - 10:30 PM | Relaxation and Residential Time |
| 10:30 PM | Lights Out |
While schedules may vary by sport, competition season, and individual development plans, the goal remains the same: balancing academic success, athletic improvement, recovery, and personal development.
How Can Parents Determine Whether Their Child Has the Potential to Be a Successful Athlete?
If a child is showing dedication to their sport, defined as multiple hours per week practicing and training during the school year and maintaining that commitment on weekends, one can assume the student is very seriously motivated.
Motivation is key in any athletic endeavor because the foundations of success are built in the daily repetition of specific movements and skills.
In addition, sports are a great enhancer of the academic classroom. No matter the beginning skill level of an athlete, there is much to be said about character traits learned through sports such as persistence, working with a diverse group of teammates, following instruction, receiving feedback, accountability, and time management.
From there, all student-athletes can become successful in their own regard because each student-athlete can reach their maximum potential. While each student's maximum potential may differ, SPIRE brings out the best ability in every athlete through our programmed and individualized approach to training.
Whether an athlete is already of elite caliber or in the fundamental development stages, there is a training solution and program for all to be successful.
What Kind of Supervision Do You Have in Place for Students Attending Your Programs?
SPIRE Academy has a dedicated student services staff that monitors students 24 hours per day, seven days a week.
Student Services is responsible for daily care, monitoring, and transportation of all students. Full-time staff members live in the dormitories with students and are available to parents when needed.
The Academy also maintains separate housing for male and female students, along with trained residential staff. In addition, SPIRE's academic, sport coaching, sports psychology, athletic training, nutrition, and performance staff work in conjunction to ensure total student-athlete development.
This holistic approach reflects broader trends identified by the , which emphasizes the importance of supporting students academically, socially, emotionally, and physically.
Do You Have Experienced Sports Medicine Professionals Available in the Event of Injury?
Our student-athletes at SPIRE Academy have access to sports medicine professionals and athletic training resources designed to support injury prevention, rehabilitation, and performance optimization.
In addition, athletic trainers are present during training sessions and competitions involving SPIRE student-athletes.
Keeping our athletes' bodies healthy is a priority for our staff, and it is evident in the way we prepare, train, and support our athletes to help reduce injury risk during competition.
The provides additional resources regarding youth health, physical activity, and wellness that align with many of today's best practices in athletic development.
Why Are Programs at SPIRE Academy a Good Investment in a Young Person's Athletic Future?
SPIRE Academy is much more than just an Academy. As a world-class event center and sought-after sports destination, students are exposed to experiences that are difficult to find in traditional high school settings.
With collegiate championships, national competitions, and elite training opportunities held on campus, young people's futures are impacted in ways that many traditional athletic programs cannot offer.
The investment into the total development of a young athlete is paramount because the window for athletic growth during the high school years is relatively short.
Today, successful athletic development extends beyond coaching and competition. It includes sports psychology, recovery science, nutrition, strength and conditioning, leadership development, and college recruiting preparation.

Preparing Student-Athletes for Long-Term Success
The most successful sports academies understand that athletic achievement is only one part of a student's journey. Academic preparation, personal growth, leadership skills, and lifelong learning remain equally important.
By combining individualized academics, elite athletic training, student support services, sports medicine resources, and college preparation, SPIRE Academy seeks to help student-athletes maximize their potential while preparing them for success beyond sports.
